Petroleum Geoscience

Petroleum Geoscience covers a wide variety of aspects involved in the study of petroleum (oil and gas) accumulations and related resources such as coal.

Society is very reliant on these resources known as 'fossil fuels' for road and air transport and electricity generation, as well as a range of petroleum-based products that we use every day. Understanding how oil and gas form and where oil discoveries might be made requires good geological and geophysical knowledge and skills.

Level 1
At Level 1 you will study Earth and Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, and Mathematics and Statistics, plus choices from Biology, Economics, Geography, and Physics.

Level 2
Level 2 units will include Earth Materials, Field Geology, Geographic Information Systems, Earth History Methods, Structural and Metamorphic Geology, and Coastal Geomorphology and Sediments. You can also choose elective units such as Geochemistry, Marine Science, Environmental Economics, Environmental Hydrology, Environmental Policy and Law, Earth Surface Processes and Soils and Petroleum Engineering.

Level 3
At Level 3 you will study Geological Mapping, Marine Geology, Structural Geology and Tectonics, Petroleum Resources, and Basin Analysis, plus other units of your choosing.

Level 4
At Level 4 you will undertake a supervised research project worth 50% of your mark for fourth year. You will also study the unit GIS and Remote Sensing, as well as elective units of your choosing.

You may earn Honours based on your marks for the project, plus your four best marks from level three units.

Career opportunities

The Bachelor of Science (Petroleum Geoscience) leads to careers working in the resources industries. You will have a variety of scientific and practical skills for working as a geologist in the petroleum industry.
